More Ways to Participate
Throughout the year Bexar Grotto, other Caver organizations, and individual Grotto members host, participate, or volunteer at various cave and karst-related events.
Spring Convention
The Texas Speleological Association holds a spring convention each year. This is a technical meeting with presentations from cavers about project status, techniques, and many other subjects. The location varies from year to year but is always held at a location where slide and video presentations are possible. Spring Convention Information
NSS Convention
The National Speleological Society hosts a convention each summer. Join your fellow cavers for a week of conference talks, salons, caving trips, and social events. The conventions are organized and run by a team of hard-working volunteers each year to keep your costs as low as possible. NSS Convention Information
Bat Flight Potluck
Once a year, the Grotto holds a potluck at the Bracken Bat Cave Preserve for members and their families. After dinner, we watch the bat flight, where millions of bats exit the cave at dusk to feed and pollinate across southern Texas.
Texas Caver Reunion
Held every fall, the Texas Cavers Reunion attracts about 300 cavers from Texas, the United States, and other countries. Many Texas caving are also represented, selling books, T-shirts, and other cool merchandise. Saturday features contests for rope climbing, cave surveying, and a speleo-obstacle course, followed by the Caver Feed and Awards Ceremony. Oh, and don’t forget the door prizes! TCR Facebook Page
Hydro~Geo Workshop
The Hydro~Geo Workshop is centered on hands-on field experience for collecting, processing, analyzing, and evaluating hydrologic and geologic field data. It is an excellent introduction for aspiring geology, hydrology, and environmental science students. The Workshop brings students and professionals together in a field setting for a hands-on learning experience and has many cave-related modules. Many Bexar Grotto members volunteer for the annual event. Hydro~Geo Workshop Information
Bexar Grotto Annual Christmas Party
The pot-luck, white elephant party is hosted at one of our caver’s homes each year. The homeowner’s rules are: Don’t get drunk, stay off the roof, and leave nothing that has no value behind.
Robber Baron Open House
Robber Baron Cave is owned and managed by the Texas Cave Management Association. The open house is an annual fundraising and outreach event in San Antonio to educate people about Robber Baron Cave’s presence, importance, and history. The event is organized by the TCMA and supported mainly by the Bexar Grotto, with volunteers coming in from Austin, Dallas, and Houston Grottos.
The Cave has been closed for several years, however, the Open House will resume sometime in the near future, so watch for announcements at future Grotto meetings.
